Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

What People Actually Bring

Men bring their own version: being caught between a wife and a mother, expected to satisfy both, and blamed by each for siding with the other.

  • «A spouse who will not intervene, or who becomes a child again in front of their parents
  • «Criticism delivered as concern, constantly and with deniability
  • «No authority over your own household, kitchen or children
  • «Comparison with other daughters-in-law, sons, or the neighbours
  • «Complete absence of privacy, including over your marriage and your fertility
  • «Money and property decisions made without you
  • «Being told that adjusting is your responsibility, indefinitely

Where the Work Focuses

The most useful shift is usually not between you and your in-laws. It is between you and your spouse — because a united couple can manage almost any extended family arrangement, and a divided one cannot manage even a reasonable one.

  • «Getting the couple aligned first, in private, before anything is raised outside
  • «Establishing what is genuinely negotiable and what is not
  • «Boundaries that are realistic within a joint household rather than borrowed from another culture
  • «Managing your own reaction, which is the part actually within your control
  • «Deciding what to escalate and what to let go, since fighting everything exhausts you
  • «Where separation of households is genuinely possible, thinking that through properly

What a First Session Involves

Usually a mapping exercise rather than advice. Who lives in the household, who decides what, where the friction actually occurs, and what has already been tried. Most people arrive with a narrative about who is unreasonable, and the useful work starts once the structure underneath that narrative is visible.

No verdict is issued about who is right. That is the thing most people want and it is not what changes the situation.

Working With One Person or With the Couple

Individual sessions help with the strain itself — the anxiety, the loss of confidence, the guilt about wanting something different, and working out which parts of the situation are genuinely changeable.

Couples sessions are frequently more effective, because the central problem is usually not the in-laws. It is that the couple has not learned to function as a unit, so disagreements get settled by the wider family rather than between the two people in the marriage. Where the husband is willing to hold a position without turning it into a war with his parents, the dynamic tends to shift substantially.

This is family dynamics work, and it has a limit. Where there is coercion, financial control, physical harm or dowry-related harassment, that is a legal matter rather than a counselling one. In India, the Women Helpline is 181 and the National Commission for Women handles dowry harassment complaints.

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Will you tell me to move out?+

No. That is a large decision with financial, practical and emotional consequences, and it is yours. Plenty of people find workable arrangements without moving; others decide moving is right. Both are examined honestly.

My husband says I am overreacting.+

That is worth exploring together. Being told you are overreacting is itself part of many of these patterns. Joint sessions are often the single most useful step.

Is this confidential? We all live in one house.+

Completely. Nothing is discussed with your spouse, in-laws or anyone else. For many clients this is the only private space they have.

Can I attend without my spouse?+

Yes, and many people start that way. Individual work is worthwhile even where the other person never attends.

Can counselling work if only I attend?+

Yes. It is not ideal, but the pattern is interactional — when one person's responses change consistently, the cycle cannot run in the same way. A good deal of durable change starts with one person.

Will you tell my husband he is wrong?+

No, and a practitioner who takes sides is not being useful. What sessions do is make the structure visible, including the position he is in, which is genuinely difficult. Most men in this situation are avoiding rather than choosing sides, and naming that tends to move things.
